Spotify Connect - now on PC and MAC.

Written by

Spotify is now finally also available for PC and Mac. A small step for Spotify - a giant leap for mankind.

Spotify Connect was aunched a year or so ago. In principle, this is about that you can send over the music selection made in one app on one device to another device that performs the actual streaming and playback. Put a little clearer, you can select music in Spotify app on a mobile or tablet, and then choose that it is an AV receiver or amplifier with a client for Spotify Connect to acquire playback. The benefits are multiple, of which we mention both the mobile released for other purposes, and it is not dependent on network capacity between mobile / tablet and amplifier.

Until now, Spotify Connect had a major limitation. It has not been available for PC or Mac, only for devices with iOS or Android operating systems. Consequently, it has not been possible to use Spotify app on a laptop user interface. Insignificant for some - annoying for others.

This is changed now. Spotify has already launched a beta version where Spotify Connect is included. And as we know it is not a long time from a Beta version to the official version. But anyway, you are already to use the beta version in parallel with the official version.

It is not just the ability to control the music from your PC to a device with Spotify Connect you get with the new version. You also get the opportunity to play to a PC or MAC from an iOS / Android device. This can be useful if you have a PC or Mac connected to a Hi-F setup, maybe by using a USB DAC.

But there is also a third perspective here that is very exciting. Spotify has as known the ability to play local files, music stored on your PC or MAC. So you can use Spotify Connect as a more general streamer from your PC to an audio component with Connect. Currently, there is a solid party pooper related to this - this possibility is limited to lossy compressed files. So you can not stream files of CD quality or HighRes via Spotify Connect. The optimist in us think that it is only a matter of time before this restriction is eliminated.
