Sony Music heavily into Pure Audio Blu-ray?

Written by

In November, Sony Music launched its first release in Pure Audio Blu-ray. Now it is rumored about 20 mure during the spring.

Both Sony Electronics and Sony Music was heavily involved in SACD format when war between SACD and DVD-Audio started more than ten years ago. No wonder, Sony was one of the license holders to the SACD format together with Philips. For the same reason it was slightly surprising that Sony was so quick to drop SACD support, when it turned out that the format could never get into the volume market that we initially had hoped.

This is history, and now the Blu-ray is the new battlefield. For now it is mostly the young enthusiast companies that have ruled on this arena, with 2L pionering the format Pure Audio Blu-ray. Major players such as Naxos and DG has also participated with sound productions on Blu-ray, but without having wagered on volume.

In 2013, a new giant on the market, the Universal Music Group declared that they invented sound-only productions on Blu-ray, 5-6 years after 2L published their first Pure Audio Blu-ray. Now it has so far appeared as a half-hearted commitment from UMG's side, with a number of surprising decisions, and a confusing terminology which seemingly High Fidelity Pure Audio defacto changes name to Blu-ray Pure Audio , kind of Pure Audio Blu-ray backwards. That was exactly what the industry needed ...!

This was a long detour just to tell that Sony Music - another of the true giants of the music industry - now seems to focus on Pure Audio Blu-ray. In November they released a recording of music history's two most played Requiem - Mozart and Verdi - a release with Pure Audio Blu-ray. And now the rumor mill has it that there are 20 "new" releases upcoming during the spring session. It should be about:

- Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
- Michael Jackson - Thriller
- Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin
- Billy Joel - The Stranger
- Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
- Janis Joplin - Pearl
- Carole King - Tapestry
- Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
- Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
- Dave Brubeck - Time Out
- Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley
- Lou Reed - Transformer
- The Clash - London Calling
- Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
- Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble - Texas Flood
- Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin 'On
- Pearl Jam - Ten
- James Taylor - JT
- Peter Tosh - Legalize It
- Patti Smith - Horses

This is partly very old trotters, but we hope that it notifies the start of a major offensive by Sony Music.
