Dolby Atmos upgrade available on Onkyo Receivers Now!

Skrevet av

Firmware update on Onkyo's midrange receivers was as promised available for download today - September 29.

There are many who have already purchased one of the midrange receivers from Onkyo viewing until 29 September with excitement. It is the day Onkyo pointed out earlier this month as D-day for Dolby Atmos. It's TX-NR636, TX-NR737 and TX NR838 that receive this upgrade today, while the two top models TX-NR1030 and TX-NR3030 will be sent out in mid-October.

There is yet hardly any software for real Atmos yet. Transformers 4 is suggested as the first Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos, and many more will probably follow later this autumn. But there is another interesting spin-off that coms with Dolby Atmos that one may explore already, and that is Dolby Surround Upmixer. This is a new algorithm that upmix stereo and 5.1 content to the speaker configuration one may encounter, including height speakers.

Dolby have spoken out very optimistic about this new algorithm, which eventually will take over the entire Dolby ProLogic II family. Dolby claims that Dolby Surround Upmixer is a far better and more efficient algorithm, also for stereo to 5.1. Well, the proof is by listening to the pudding. But it seems promising that this algorithm unlike DPL II does not touch the front channels. I have always experienced DPL II on stereo music recordings devastating for front perspective and precision of the front channels, and this should now have opportunities to become far better.
